Stay safe during Halloween with the buddy system, safe drinking practices and more

As Halloween festivities near, the WVU Police Department provides important reminders to ensure your safety in and out of costumes.

Use the buddy system. No matter your plans, travel with people you know and stay with that group. Never leave a member of your group behind, and have a plan for your group to get home safely whether it’s a ride-sharing app, designated driver, taxi or walking.

And as you venture around Morgantown, please remember to stay alert while walking or driving and follow pedestrian and driver safety tips. Pedestrians should only cross at marked crosswalks and intersections, put their phones down so they can focus on their surroundings and walk in well-lit areas when possible. Drivers should be extra cautious, reduce their speed and yield to pedestrians.

If you choose to celebrate with alcohol, please drink responsibly:

  • Avoid drinking games.
  • Stick with one type of alcohol.
  • Eat food before and during drinking.
  • Set a limit for drinks and keep track of the number consumed.
  • Do not leave your drink unattended and do not let someone pour your drink out of your sight.

And we cannot emphasize enough to call for help if someone is in danger of drug or alcohol overdose – medical amnesty may apply. Under the University’s Student Code of Conduct, and the laws of West Virginia, bystanders and those affected by drug or alcohol overdose may be safe from prosecution and may not face charges if they seek medical assistance in an emergency. If you see someone in danger, always call for help. Every minute counts.

Your safety is of utmost importance. As we continue to work diligently to protect all Mountaineers, these safety tips can help you stay as safe as possible.
