Control your privacy: Keep devices and data secured, updated and protected

Data privacy and data security go hand in hand. In support of Data Privacy Week, Information Technology Services recommends these steps for securing your devices.

  1. Don't leave equipment unattended. If you need to step away, even briefly, take your computer or phone with you to prevent theft or unauthorized access.

  2. Create a unique lock. Make sure access to your device requires a passcode or a unique biometric identifier such as a fingerprint or facial recognition.

  3. Limit app downloads. Before installing any new app, make sure you are using an official app store and verify the developer’s credibility.

  4. Use a VPN. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your internet connection, protecting your data from prying eyes, especially on public Wi-Fi networks. Consider using reputable VPN services like NordVPN for your personally owned devices.
  5. Periodically review downloaded apps. Delete apps you no longer use or don’t recognize. Check your settings for a list of all apps, not just those that appear on your home screen.

  6. Use antivirus software. Employees and students get free Sophos anti-virus software for up to three personal devices.

  7. Use strong authentication. Create long, unique passwords for each account and store them in a password manager. Never reuse or share passwords. Add more security by enabling multi-factor authentication wherever possible, especially on accounts that store sensitive information.

  8. Keep apps and devices current. Turn on automatic device, software, and browser updates, or make sure you install updates as soon as they are available.
