Simple Servings makes dining with allergies safe

When it comes to guests with allergies or food sensitivities, WVU Dining Services understands the complexities that can be involved with finding safe and appetizing foods to eat. That’s why we have three dining halls that offer a variety of options for those who are allergic to certain items. FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) estimates that 4 percent of adults have food allergies, and the prevalence of food allergies is on the rise.

Through the Simple Servings stations at Hatfields, Café Evansdale and Summit Café, guests are able to eat foods that are free of seven of the top eight allergens: milk, eggs, wheat, soy, shellfish, peanuts and tree nuts. Not only is the food served there free of the allergens, but it is also prepared in a separate area of the kitchen to prevent cross-contamination. When it comes to foods free of allergens, the Simple Servings stations are the only locations where the foods are guaranteed to be free of the seven allergens. The foods offered at these stations vary at each dining hall and change every day. A recent Simple Servings dinner menu at Hatfields included rosemary roasted pork loin, sautéed zucchini with stewed tomatoes, and baked potato.

If you’d like a different menu option due to allergy restrictions, please contact our dining hall before your meal time and talk with the chef about having a meal prepared specially for you. Or, if you are at a dining hall and you’re unsure about the ingredients of a certain dish, please ask one of our supervisors or chefs for assistance.

We’d also like to remind our guests with allergies to contact Campus Dietitian Cami Haught, who is available for free one-on-one appointments with students to help you navigate college life with allergies or dietary restrictions. She can be reached at ccmcmillen@mail.wvu.edu

And finally, we’d like to remind our diners of the convenience of the Bite app. By downloading this app, our guests can not only see the foods being offered at each of our four dining halls, but can also see the allergy and nutritional information, and even filter the menus based on your preferences.

We at WVU Dining Services hope to make the dining experience of all our guests enjoyable and safe. Please contact us at dining@mail.wvu.edu or 304-293-3166 with any questions or concerns.
