Student Engagement and Leadership invites all freshmen and first-year transfer students to become a member of the First-Year Leadership Academy. The spring cohort is now accepting applications.

We truly believe that ALL Mountaineers can be leaders and this Academy is a great way to start your leadership development journey at West Virginia University. The First-Year Leadership Academy provides an opportunity for you to not only enhance your leadership skills and prepare for student leadership roles for the rest of your time at the university and beyond, but also to learn about yourself, network, and develop meaningful relationships with peers.
First-Year Leadership Academy is a five (5)-week program offered one day a week on Tuesday nights from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Kickoff event will be held on Friday, February 7 at 6:00 p.m. Registration is now open on WVUEngage. The deadline to sign-up is Wednesday, February 5, 2025. There is a $30 commitment fee to enter the program, which is due before the Kickoff event on Friday, February 7.
Each first-year student in the program will be assigned an upper class student mentor for the year, learn about numerous campus offices and resources, and have the opportunity to work in groups on a service project. To sign-up for the program, please follow the link for registration. Spots are limited so we want to encourage you all to fill out the registration form and make your payment with the links below to reserve your spot in the Academy as soon as possible. We do have limited fee waivers available to those who want to do this program, but the commitment fee is the only thing preventing them.
