WRC Lactation Resources and Break Rights at WVU

WVU is sharing important information about lactation resources and break time expectations for students and instructors.

Students who are expressing milk are entitled to reasonable break time based on their individual needs. Students may step out of class to pump and return without academic penalty. Instructors may not deny or delay pumping breaks when doing so could cause discomfort or potential health concerns.

WVU provides appropriate lactation spaces across campus. These rooms are private, shielded from view, free from interruptions, and equipped with a seat, flat surface, and electrical outlet. Bathrooms, locker rooms, and cars do not meet the requirements for pumping space.

These break time and space requirements are established under federal law and university policy.

Consistent with university guidance, wearable pumps may be used in class unless there is a documented safety or privacy concern.
