Traveling around campus: fall 2026 transportation and parking information

As you prepare your travel plans for the fall 2026 semester, you have several transportation options on and around campus to get you where you need to go.

PRT

The Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system is now open.

Riding the PRT is quick and easy. It’s also one of the most efficient and sustainable ways to get around campus.

The PRT has stations available on all three areas of campus:

· Walnut – downtown Morgantown

· Beechurst – Downtown area of campus

· Engineering – Evansdale area of campus

· Towers – Evansdale area of campus

· HSC – Health Sciences area of campus

All students and employees ride the PRT for free with a valid WVU ID. Members of the public can pay just $0.50 to ride.

To ride, just tap your card or pay, push the button next to your chosen destination, enter through the turnstiles, and wait for your ride. Use the digital signage across the platforms to know when your vehicle is arriving and where you can board.

While using the PRT, follow all guidelines to ensure your safety. Avoid overloading the vehicle or holding the doors open. Passengers should also never step onto the electrically powered guideway or forcibly open vehicle doors or windows unless instructed to do so. The platforms and stations are monitored by PRT Central Control staff at all times. If you have any questions or concerns while using the PRT, please use the assistance telephones located on each platform to talk directly to PRT Central Control.

The PRT operates Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m., and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sunday. The PRT may have adjusted hours of operation for campus events and University holidays.

The PRT is currently scheduled to operate on adjusted hours on the following dates:

• Aug. 14: 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• Aug. 15: 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• Aug. 16: 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• Aug. 17: 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• Sept. 5: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Sept. 7: closed (Labor Day)

• Oct. 9: closed (Fall Break)

• Nov. 3: closed (Election Day)

• Nov. 22-29: closed (Fall Recess)

• Dec. 12 to early Jan. 2027: closed (Winter Recess)

The PRT will also operate for one hour after the conclusion of any home football or men’s basketball game that extends past normal operating hours.

WVU buses

When there is an extended interruption in PRT service, buses will run in its place. These buses will stop near the PRT stations to pick up those passengers who were waiting for the PRT. Bus services will end when the PRT resumes service.

• Walnut: Hodges Hall bus loop
• Beechurst: Hodges Hall bus loop
• Engineering: Bus lane above the short-term parking lot (Lot 9) at the lower level of Evansdale Crossing
• Towers: Bus loop in front of Brooke Tower
• Medical/HSC: Bus lane in front of Mountaineer Station

Mountain Line buses

The Mountain Line Transit Authority is Morgantown’s public bus system. WVU students and employees can ride Mountain Line buses for free with a valid WVU ID.

There are several campus bus routes that take passengers between our areas of campus and beyond each day. Many Morgantown bus routes also operate to transport passengers throughout the local community.

Bike racks

Bike racks are located across campus and can be used by any bicyclists to park and lock your bike.

We also encourage you to register your bike with the WVU Police Department so officers can more easily identify your bike if it’s ever stolen or lost. The department also recommends using a high-quality U-Lock to secure your bike to one of the designated bike racks because U-Locks are harder to cut than traditional cable locks.

Driving

If driving your personal vehicle is your preferred method of transportation, parking is available on campus but is limited.

We offer permit parking and short-term paid parking options. Permit parking is only available to those who have purchased a permit for that lot. These lots are indicated by “Area” and followed by a number. Those who park in permit lots without a permit for that lot may receive a parking citation. To view available permits, visit the Parking Management Office at Mountaineer Station or purchase online.

Short-term parking can be paid on an hourly basis and is first-come, first-served. These lots are indicated by “ST” and followed by a number. Drivers can pay for short-term parking with a credit/debit card at a pay station or through the ParkMobile app.

Short-term parking is $1.25 per hour at surface lots and $1.50 per hour in WVU parking garages (Mountaineer Station and Mountainlair). The daily rate at the Coliseum parking lot is $2 per day.

Recently added to campus, a new short-term parking lot (ST-12) is available on the Evansdale area of campus near Engineering and adjacent to Area 40. There are 48 available spaces. Pay stations are not available in this lot, so all payments must be made via ParkMobile.

The Parking Management team utilizes License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology to enforce parking rules, so it’s important that your license plate information is accurate and up to date in the Parking Portal. Plates must be clearly visible from the drivable aisle of the lots. Vehicles with only rear plates must park head-in. Backing in or pulling through a spot may result in a citation if your plate isn’t visible. LPR is integrated with ParkMobile and campus pay stations, so your plate number is used instead of a space number when paying for short-term parking.

The Morgantown Parking Authority also offers several parking options near campus.

Citation fee structure

Standard parking citations are $25, excluding ADA violations, and parking citations are issued on a tiered system.

Citation costs for repeat violations escalate by $10 for each subsequent offense, up to three violations within a one-year period. The first standard citation is $25, the second is $35, and the third and subsequent citations are $45 for up to one year. The counter for repeat violations will reset on Aug. 1 each year, meaning the first citation received on or after Aug. 1 each year will reset to $25.

Payments are subject to a $15 late payment fee when citations are past due (30 days after the citation is written).

Ridesharing

Morgantown offers several ridesharing services, like Uber and Lyft. These are good options for traveling at night after PRT and bus services have ended or when you are unable to drive yourself.
