February 12, 2026
Science Behind the Sport – Scout Jamboree Volunteer
Dates: July 19 – 31, 2026*
Location: Summit Bechtel Reserve (Glen Jean, WV)
Position Summary:
WVU’s Science Behind the Sport is seeking volunteers to teach fun, hands-on STEM lessons connected to adventure sports at the 2026 National Scout Jamboree.
Who we are:
This year, our program will teach the science behind five activities: cycling, paddling, climbing, skateboarding, and archery. Scouts will learn how understanding projectile motion can improve their aim at archery, and how their center of gravity helps them balance while paddling.
What you’ll do:
· Teach hands-on STEM lessons that get youth (ages 12-18) excited for Jamboree activities.
· Represent West Virginia and WVU to 15,000 Scouts from across the country.
· Spend evenings free to participate in Jamboree activities. We’ll also host evening activities for volunteers, like games and ice cream parties.
Perks you’ll get:
· Admission to the Jamboree (registration fees are covered by WVU)
· $500 scholarship for the Fall 2026 semester
· ~ 50 Registered Community Service hours
· All meals, housing, and transportation to/from the Summit will be provided.
· WVU swag package - shirts, etc.
Who should sign up:
WVU students who enjoy working with youth, being outside, teaching, or all of the above! Current and former Scouts are welcome, but no previous Scouting experience is necessary. You don’t need to be an expert at adventure sports or STEM; we’ll teach you everything you need to know.
How to sign up:

*While we hope that you can work the full 10 days with us, please still reach out if you have a small scheduling conflict; we can be flexible.
