Group Message Safety Tips
November 20, 2025
Many students use GroupMe, WhatsApp, Discord, and other messaging platforms to stay connected with friends, classmates, and campus groups. These tools are helpful, but they can also bring risks like scams, impersonation attempts, or unprofessional behavior if not used carefully.
Here are some quick tips to help keep your group chats safe and respectful:
Keep Chats Private
Avoid posting invite links publicly and only add people you know or can verify.
Verify New Members
If someone wants to join a class, club, or group chat, make sure they’re legitimate before adding them.
Watch for Scams
Be cautious of accounts selling items, requesting money, or asking for verification codes. If something seems off, don’t respond.
Protect Personal Information
Don’t share IDs, addresses, passwords, or private links. Remember—screenshots can always be shared.
Be Respectful and Professional
Your digital communication reflects on you. Keep conversations appropriate and considerate.
Use Separate Chats for Different Purposes
Creating different spaces for classes, roommates, events, or organizations can help keep conversations organized.
Move Sensitive Topics Offline
Financial questions, conflicts, or private matters are best handled through email or in-person conversations.
Think Before You Send
If you wouldn’t want a professor, advisor, or future employer to see it, don’t post it.
Set Expectations Early
If you’re creating a new chat, pin a short note encouraging respectful communication and reminding others not to share scams or unauthorized sales.
Address Issues Quickly
If someone’s behavior becomes inappropriate or unsafe, ask them to stop, remove them from the chat if needed, and tell someone you trust.
If You Suspect a Scam or Threat
Stop responding and block the account immediately. Report concerns to WVU Police (304-293-2677). If you feel unsafe or need to talk to someone, contact the Carruth Center (304-293-4431) or text WVU to 741741 for support.
Thank you for helping keep WVU’s digital spaces safe, supportive, and respectful for everyone.
